A Team vs. Wrightchoice CSA Youth (A) 2 - 1 David Kumah, Steven Buckley |
|
Town made it 3 wins in a row in the battle to beat the drop with another hard thought win this time against top of the table Wrightchoice who had defeated Town 6-1 in January. Going to Wrightchoice was always going to be a tough encounter but was made tougher with drop outs in the morning and one no show with Mike Akem Che left them with only 11 players and a flu ridden gaffer in John Mailer having to play. Gary Edwards made his debut on the right of midfield after failing to get off the bench last week. Aidan Hudson took the place of injured keeper Stuart Neave
The pitch was not in the best condition which played in Woodley's hands as Wrightchoice could not get their passing game going. The early exchanges were scrappy as both teams struggled to get a foot hold in the game and chances were limited to a couple of long range efforts.
Wrightchoice were to take the lead in unfortunate circumstances as an inswinging corner was headed onto his own crossbar and in by Matt Bennett on the far post. Town though had history in the last few weeks of coming back from a goal down and this proved to be the case when Chris Ward's clearance rebounded off Dave Kumah who was free on goal and slotted left footed past the goalkeeper for 1-1.
Wrightchoice looked dangerous from set pieces but Ashley Bantock and Andy Holder were once again superb at centre back and Town as a team defender superbly. Lewis O'Connor continued his recent good form attacking his full back and sent in a couple of good crosses that Mailer and Kumah just missed.
Woodley had Hudson to thank just before the break with a fine save and another clearance as he came rushing out.
At half time Woodley sensed they could take a scalp here with Wrightchoice rattled and Town putting in a determined spirited performance all over the park.
Wrightchoice came out in the 2nd half rejuvenated and had a great spell in the first 20 mins and forced numorous corners yet could not find a way past a tight town defence
A great Woodley move involving Conor Creegan, Edwards & Kumah ended with Buckley chesting down and hitting a superb volley onto the Wrightchoice bar from all of 25 yards.
The game was to turn in a 3 minute spell which saw Wrightchoice squander a golden chance when a slip by Bantock allowed Aston Robinson in on goal but the superb Hudson thwarted him and kept Town in the game.
Minutes later another great town move between Bennett and O'Connor saw the ball into Kumah's path and he chipped the ball over the defence where Buckley ran through and fired into the bottom corner for 2-1 Town.
With 15 minutes to go Mailer made a change to 5 in the middle with Kumah given the job of man marking Aaron Lynch as Town took the sting out of the game and closed it out though Mailer had the chance to finish it with minutes remaining but waited too long for the ball to come down and Wrightchoice cleared.
Town held on to win and continued their recent impressive form which has now seen them start to pick up results and the squad is looking so much stronger with the addition of Buckley and the return from injury and absence of Mark Snell & Matt Bennett. Though they still have to pick up some point to make sure of staying up.
